Growth Should Mean More Than More Rooftops

Carencro has been called the fastest-growing city in Louisiana. That sounds good, and by one measure it may be true.

 

But here is the question every resident should be asking:

Fastest growing in what way?

If “growth” means official resident population inside city limits, Carencro has had a very strong run. A 43.2% increase in population from 2020 to 2025. That headline rest on the single population-estimated Census numbers.

 

But when most citizens hear “growing city,” they do not think only about rooftops. They think about jobs. Roads. Drainage. Water pressure. Sewer capacity. Public safety. Traffic. Schools. Parks. Small businesses. Sales tax growth. Better services. A stronger quality of life.

 

That is where the story gets more complicated.

 

Carencro appears to be adding residents, but residents are right to ask whether the city has a real plan to manage that growth. More subdivisions alone do not make a city stronger. More rooftops without matching infrastructure can create more traffic, more drainage problems, more utility strain, and more pressure on taxpayers.

 

A growing city should be able to answer simple questions:

Are we adding local jobs, or just bedrooms for people who work elsewhere?

 

Are our sales taxes growing along with the population?

 

Are our roads, drainage, water, sewer, police, fire, and parks keeping up?

 

Are new developments paying their fair share of the burden they create?

 

Are we attracting commercial investment, restaurants, shops, offices, and employers?

 

Are residents seeing better services, or just bigger budgets?

 

Carencro needs a growth plan.

 

As mayor, I would measure growth by what residents actually experience. I would publish a clear annual growth scorecard showing population, permits, housing units, business activity, sales tax collections, utility connections, infrastructure needs, public safety staffing, drainage projects, road conditions, and service performance.

 

Growth should not be something City Hall brags about while residents wonder why they do not feel the benefits.

 

Real growth means a stronger tax base, better services, responsible development, safer streets, reliable utilities, and a city that protects the quality of life that made people want to live here in the first place.

 

Carencro is growing.

 

Now we need leadership that makes sure growth works for the people who already call Carencro home!
